The world of work

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Some notes about conditionals:

UNLESS = IF NOT

  • You won't pass your exams unless you work harder.
  • You won't pass your exams if you don't work harder.
MODALS ( can, may, could, might...) can sometimes be used instead of will or would.
  • If I hadn't gone to the party, I could have gone to bed earlier.
WERE: We often use were instead of was in the 2nd conditional.
  • If I were a rich woman, I would travel to Australia and volunteer in an animal sanctuary.
TEMPORALS: Time expressions like before, after, by the time , when, until, till and as soon as are followed by Present simple. This is similar to 1st conditional.
  • I'll  go to Alicante after I finish working.
